Description:
Despite the wealth, talent, and investment in American health care, our nation performs poorly in many dimensions when compared with other developed nations in the world. This session will explore the reasons for our shortfalls and will discuss possible remedies in public policy and private action, centering on fundamental changes in how we approach the financing and delivery of care. Equally, we will explore barriers that help keep the status quo system in charge, despite the evidence that it cannot, under current circumstances, deliver what the nation needs.

Learning Objectives:
Describe where the US ranks among other nations in health care performance and health status.
  • Explain mechanisms whereby the current health care system resists fundamental change.
  • Discuss principles of redesign of care that could offer the potential of better care at lower cost in the US.
