Description:An individual’s social, physical and economic circumstances are strongly linked to his/her health. These social realities mean a lack of nutritious food, unhealthy housing conditions, substandard education, exposure to violence or discrimination - all of which have a negative impact on health that results in higher rates of acute and chronic disease, behavioral and mental illness and substance use. Physicians often look only to treat the patients complaint or disease that presents before them at the moment of the encounter and they often do not consider social determinants when treating patients and families. A more holistic approach to the patient's environment and circumstances is needed to improve health and compliance with treatment plans. This educational activity will provide evidence and details about the impact of social, cultural and economic factors on health outcomes and the work that is underway and planned to assist physicians with addressing social determinants of health (SDOH).
• Describe the impact of economic, physical and social conditions on the health of individuals and communities
• Develop appropriate skills to recognize the impact of SDOH on health outcomes
• Discuss how the Massachusetts Medical Society's SDOH initiatives contribute to reduction of health inequities
