Description: Infectious diseases, mental illness and substance use not only cause sickness, pain and loss for patients and communities, they can also trigger a common corollary of illness, stigma. The bias and discrimination that accompany certain diseases can prevent those with disease from seeking care, engender fear of those who have the disease, cause prejudice against entire groups or communities, and distort perceptions of risk. Our public health and medical response to new and emerging infections and stereotyped health conditions requires providing the information and preventative measures necessary to protect individuals and communities in a manner that does not further exacerbate social and health disparities. This year’s forum will examine health related stigma and discuss interventions to counter the misinformation and fear that impede access to safe, equitable, and quality healthcare. Attendees will hear from Anne Stangl, PhD, President Hera Solutions, LLC and Associate Faculty, Social and Behavioral Interventions, Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health; Cassandra Pierre, MD, MPH, Medical Director, Center for Infectious Diseases, Boston Medical Center, and Michael Curry, Esq., Deputy Chief Executive Officer and General Counsel, Massachusetts League of Community Health Centers.
