Description: Dementia is a much-feared topic because there is no specific medical cure. Understanding of the multiple contributors to the dementias is a rapidly evolving field. An active area of research involves a preventive approach. Confronting difficult subjects such as driving and advance care planning is generally avoided. Learning objectives: Recognize the most common dementias other than Alzheimer’s Dementia -Understand that cognitive decline may be prevented or slowed through lifestyle choices. -Acknowledge the importance of the caregiver as part of the treatment and management plan. -Feel confident discussing patient values soon after diagnosis: driving, advance care planning Having the time to discuss the diagnosis/prognosis, the patient’s values, and the course of action is probably the most daunting. By using a team approach some of the burden can be distributed.
