During many emergencies bystanders are often the first on the scene before the arrival of emergency medical services (EMS) responders. A person who is bleeding can die from blood loss within five minutes, therefore it is important to act quickly to stop the bleeding.
In October 2015, the Obama Administration launched the “Stop the Bleed” campaign to provide bystanders of emergency situations with the tools and knowledge to stop life threatening bleeding. The “Stop the Bleed” campaign puts knowledge gained by first responders and the military, into the hands of the public to help save lives.
The goal of this initiative is to build national resilience and save lives by empowering bystanders to be aware of the simple steps that can be taken to stop or slow life threatening bleeding, and to promote public access to Bleeding Control Kits. The course will teach the techniques of bleeding control as recommended by the Hartford Consensus and as taught in the Bleeding Control for the Injured Course developed by the American College of Surgeons (ACS) in partnership with the National Association of Emergency Medical Technicians.
This 45-minute session for clinicians will teach hemorrhage control in the field to increase victim survival.
Activity Objectives:
After participating in this activity, you should be able to:
- Correctly control junctional exsanguination
- Correctly control limb exsanguination
- Correctly identify the most common mistakes made when controlling junctional and limb hemorrhage.
