Program Title: Shorebirds Field Trip

Program Content: This field trip experience follows the MMS New England Shorebirds lecture on Wednesday, September 4. It will be helpful, but not necessary, for participants on this field trip to have attended the introductory lecture.

From our meeting place at refuge headquarters, we will carpool to the Plum Island section of the refuge. We will make stops at the best shorebird viewing areas, including the beach at Parking Lot #1, Salt Pannes Wildlife Observation Area, North Pool Overlook, Hellcat, and Stage Island Pool. Time and parking permitting, we will also visit Sandy Point State Reservation. We expect to see Greater Yellowlegs, Lesser Yellowlegs, Black-bellied Plover, Semipalmated Plover, Piping Plover, Short-billed Dowitcher, and many more.

Throughout our trip, we will discuss aids to field identification, review plumage characteristics, observe feeding behavior, and discuss each species’ migration strategy.

Of course, we will take every opportunity to see ducks, loons, herons and egrets, and birds of prey.

Group Size: 15 Participants

Meeting Place: Parker River National Wildlife Refuge Headquarters, 6 Plum Island Turnpike, Newburyport, MA. We will carpool following MMS guidelines.

Instructor(s): Bill Gette
