Program Content: From our meeting place at Parking Lot #1 on the Parker River National Wildlife Refuge (Plum Island), we will work our way south along the refuge road looking for a wide variety of birds. We expect to see species that are permanent residents as well as migrants that are moving south from their breeding ranges much farther north.
At Parking Lot #1, we will take a short walk along a boardwalk to the observation platform overlooking the ocean. Here, we expect to see diving ducks, loons, grebes, and with luck, Northern Gannets.
Our second stop will be at the Salt Pannes Wildlife Observation Area where we expect to find some late-migrating shorebirds (e.g., Greater Yellowlegs, Dunlin) and dabbling ducks (e.g., Northern Pintail, American Wigeon).
As we drive along, we will scan the salt marshes, fields, and forest edges for birds of prey. Mid-October is a good time to look for Red-tailed Hawk, Northern Harrier, Merlin, and Peregrine Falcon.
The Maintenance Sub-headquarters is a good place to see a variety of sparrows, including Song, Savannah, and White-throated.
At the Hellcat Wildlife Observation Area, we will look for waterfowl in the two large impoundments as well as more shorebirds. The woodlands around the parking area and the dike are often very productive.
Our pace will be relatively slow to ensure that participants have an opportunity to see the birds and work through the identification process.
This field trip is ideal for birders of all experience levels. Never gone birding before? Give it a try. It’s great fun.
