All who prescribe and dispense medicine in Norfolk County are urged to join Norfolk District Attorney Michael W. Morrissey for the 2017 Safe Prescribing & Dispensing Conference on September 14, 2017.  This conference, planned in partnership with the Massachusetts Medical Society and the Northeastern University School of Pharmacy will provide practitioners with specific information developed from a review of all fatal overdoses in Norfolk County.  Participants will learn about access to medicine as seen in pharmaceutical overdose, learn about risk factors for addiction in Norfolk County and how Mass PAT, insurance coverage limitations, legislative and regulatory requirements will help you make more informed prescribing and dispensing decisions to protect your patients and your practice.

This conference is offered at no cost to those who prescribe and dispense medicine in Norfolk County.

Activity Objectives:
After participating in this activity, you should be able to:
  • Describe the functionality and utilization of MassPAT to enhance prescribing and dispensing of controlled substances
  • Explain strategies and challenges to overdose prevention
  • Identify insurance coverage for patients taking opioids that influence patient safety and utilization management
  • List the challenges prescribers face when writing prescriptions for patients with substance use disorder
  • Summarize the guidelines for safe prescribing and dispensing of controlled substances
  • Name interdisciplinary interventions that lead to the safer use of opioid prescriptions
  • Explain treatment options for opioid use disorder 
  • Describe the importance of developing appropriate post-operative prescribing standards for opioids
